Yesterday brought us the very first look at the upcoming Pet Sematary movie, set to hit theatres in spring of next year. Now, the poster has been unleashed in all its dark, evocative glory — trust us, this story is definitely in good hands if these early marketing materials are anything to go by.
Due for release on April 5, 2019, the movie, a reboot/remake of sorts, is co-directed by Starry Eyes’ Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer from a screenplay by Jeff Buhler, who adapted Clive Barker’s short story for Ryûhei Kitamura fan fave The Midnight Meat Train.
It features a trio of high-profile names at its helm, in John Lithgow, Jason Clarke, and Amy Seimetz. 11-year-old newcomer Jeté Laurence plays Ellie Creed, the youngster who discovers the eponymous graveyard and unknowingly unleashes horror upon the small town of Ludlow, Maine.
The official synopsis is as follows:
Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

In an interview with EW, the cast and crew waxed lyrical about the importance of bringing real-life horrors to this latest adaptation of Stephen King’s horrifying novel. Most importantly, the focus is on family, grief, and the difficulties of moving on after the loss of a loved one.
Judging by the poster, which you can drool over below, the film-makers are definitely on the right track. The 1989 classic is beloved of horror fans, but this new take could be up there with last year’s brilliant IT.
