MGM and Orion recently revealed that they are moving forward with a remake of Tom Holland’s 1988 killer doll opus, Child’s Play. The redux is separate from the existing film series and will not feature the vocal talents of Brad Dourif or any involvement whatsoever from series co-creator Don Mancini.
Below, we have a brand new still depicting the likeness of the Chucky doll in the upcoming reboot to share with you (courtesy of EW). Our first impression is that he looks awfully similar to the Chucky doll we all know and love. Check him out for yourself, below and be sure to let us know what you think.
The stated intent of the remake, which is now filming, is to begin a new franchise that will (presumably) co-exist with the direct-to-DVD sequels Mancini has been working on of late.
Early reports suggest that the remake won’t feature a supernatural origin story like the original film. The Chucky doll will be a robotic toy that has been hacked by a disgruntled factory worker to remove limitations on his ability to learn and his capacity for violence.
While it seems like an extremely strange move to remake a franchise that is still in progress, perhaps we will get more clarity on the motivation for doing so in the coming months. Stay tuned to the site for more on this as we learn it.
Aubrey Plaza (Life After Beth) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) will appear as Karen Barclay and Detective Mike Norris, respectively. Gabriel Bateman of Lights Out has signed on to play young Andy Barclay.
The remake script was penned by Tyler Burton Smith and will be helmed by Norwegian director Lars Klevberg. David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith (who previously collaborated on the remake of Stephen King’s IT) will produce.
The official plot synopsis for the remake is as follows: “Child’s Play follows a mother who gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.”
