In news that should make your entire week, Sean Byrne’s impeccable The Devil’s Candy – long stuck on the shelf for reasons unknown – is finally hitting theaters this year.
Bloody Disgusting reports that the flick is due for a limited theatrical release on March 17, via IFC Midnight. It will also be released simultaneously on VOD platforms.
The Devil’s Candy is Byrne’s long-anticipated follow-up to fan favourite The Loved Ones. It stars Ethan Embry and Shiri Appleby as heavy metal parents struggling to make ends meet while raising their tween daughter in rural Texas.
Produced by Keith and Jessica Calder (the team behind hot horror properties including Blair Witch, You’re Next and The Guest), the movie sees Embry besieged by demonic forces.
The official synopsis is as follows:
In THE DEVIL’S CANDY, Jesse, a struggling artist, moves with his wife and daughter into their dream house in rural Texas, the price driven down by the property’s dark past. Their lives soon begin to unravel as the demonic forces lurking in the house take hold of the young family. Jesse’s paintings take a satanic turn while the family is plagued by Ray, the deranged son of the former owners. Soon it becomes clear that Jesse and Ray are both being influenced by the same dark forces and that Jesse and his family aren’t safe from its former inhabitants or indeed from the devil himself
To say anymore would be to ruin it, but suffice to say the flick made a serious splash at TIFF 2015. We caught it at Frightfest 2016 and gave it an unprecedented 10/10.
At the time, I enthusiastically wrote: “As a moment in horror, it’s life-changing.”
And it really is. Trust me, do not miss this one when it hits theaters and VOD. It’s something very special indeed.
