We heard way back at the beginning of the year that Friday the 13th would be rolling out its first video game since Jason stalked the NES in 1989, but since then any news on the game has been pretty quiet. Now, we have a major update on the project along with a Kickstarter campaign.
As it turns out, the official Friday the 13th video game will actually be an evolution of Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp, an initially unrelated game from developer Gun Media which included work from Friday the 13th alumni Tom Savini, Harry Manfredini, and Kane Hodder. Now, they’ve taken the full plunge from homage to officially licensed game.
Set in the “semi-open world of Crystal Lake”, gameplay consists of asymmetrical multiplayer (similar to recent title Evolve) where you play as either one of the teens trying to survive the night, or Jason Voorhees himself. This gameplay is also strikingly similar to that of the indie title, Last Year, which ran a successful Kickstarter campaign in late 2014 before getting into a a legal battle over one of their killers looking very similar to Jason. Currently, Last Year looks like it’s back in production with a redesigned killer.
The Kickstarter has its goal set at $700,000, with $70,000 already pledged at the time of this writing. Pledging $25 or more gets you a copy of the game on your choice of platform (PC, Xbox One, or PS4). It looks like there are a ton of stretch goals reaching up to 4 million, but right now they’re all blurred out in the picture. One of them is confirmed to be a returning Tommy Jarvis though, so that’s pretty sweet.
