Variety has reported a series of casting announcements for the upcoming fifth installment in the Underworld franchise. The fifth film will see a character from Awakening returning and one of the mainstays of the franchise absent from this latest installment. We’ve got more details for you beyond the jump!

The entertainment site Variety has learned that Lakeshore Entertainment has signed actor Theo James (Divergent) for a leading role in the currently untitled fifth installment of the Underworld franchise. However, the latest incarnation of the series will not see Kate Beckinsale reprising her role as Selene. This will be James’ second appearance in an Underworld picture. He first popped up in the franchise as David in the fourth film Underworld: Awakening

Production on the fifth installment in the popular lycanthrope vs. death dealers series is gaining steam and is reportedly scheduled to begin lensing as early as Spring of 2015.

The series tells the story of a centuries old clan of vampires that are constantly at war with a group of lycanthropes. The first film sees Selene, a vampire, falling in love with a werewolf, which creates serious complications for the opposing groups. The first Underworld picture made its debut in 2003 and the franchise has since turned serious profits for Lakeshore Entertainment with the films already having grossed $222.4 million domestically.
