While I am still not exactly on board with the idea of remaking John Carpenter’s sci-fi classic Big Trouble in Little China, I am slightly less opposed after hearing Duane Johnson offer some insight on the project.
In speaking with EW, The Rock admitted that he wasn’t surprised by the fan reaction to the announcement and also revealed that he wants John Carpenter to be a part of the process. “I loved reading the reactions from the fans, that they were so polarized – I’m the same way,” said Johnson. “My response is: Know that I come to the project with nothing but love and respect for the original, which is why we want to bring on John Carpenter.” Johnson also told the outlet that he would like for Kurt Russell to be involved in some capacity.
Further melting my resolve was Johnson’s understanding that the project isn’t worth making if they can’t do it right. In his own words: “Let’s see what feels good, what we can come up with and then go from there,” Johnson said. “And as we write it, if the whole thing starts to stink up, then we thank everybody for their efforts and accept this just couldn’t make it.”
The script is being penned by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class) and Johnson is in negotiations to both star in the film and produce. Stay tuned to the site for more on this project as it is announced.
