Chained – Nowhere To Go

Jennifer Lynch film Chained reviewed by Nicola Odeku

[soliloquy id=”1931″]

Directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch, Chained, is a powerfully gripping movie that packs a real punch and a kick to the stomach at the same time.

The story revolves itself around Bob (Vincent D’Onofrio- TV series Law & Order, The Cell), who is a loner that travels the streets in his taxi, snatching up women who take his fancy.

Sarah (Julia Ormond- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and her son Tim (Evan Bird) leave a concerned father Brad (Jake Weber- Dawn of the Dead) to go to the movies, promising to take a taxi home. This car ride will prove to be the worse decision they have ever made, but one they cannot escape from once they get inside.

The character study is a very disturbing, complex and shocking. The performances are powerful and intense and the movie keeps you glued to the screen and on the edge of your seat.

To say much more would give you too much and spoil any shocks for you but Chained is a fascinating portrait of an ersatz father-son relationship. Eamon Farren who plays older Tim, also known as Rabbit, the name Bob gives to him, is as jittery as his name implies. In brief flashbacks, we catch glimpses of Bob’s childhood and the horrors he himself witnessed and participated in at an early age. D’Onofrio is terrifying, and not in the movie-monster way; his character’s evil seems real, all the more so because of his attention to detail and usually calm demeanor, logic, and intelligence.

Jennifer Lynch has crafted yet another distressing, graphic and wicked movie and Chained will make you think twice about getting into a cab ever again.

I would recommend Chained to anyone not easily distressed and looking for a story with some depth.
