Hunger – Starved To Eat

The 2009 Hunger movie directed by Steven Hentges.

Hunger is a film produced for the Fangoria Frightfest film selections, directed by Steven Hentges and written by L.D. Goffigan. It depicts a horrifying exploration into the breakdown of humanity.

Hunger begins with five strangers who wake up in a dark, underground cave with no recollection of how they got there. The cave’s inhabitants include Jordan (Lori Heuring- Just Go with It), Grant (Linden Ashby- Resident Evil: Extinction, Mortal Kombar), Luke (Joe Egender- The Hamiltons), Alex (Julian Rojas), and Anna (Lea Kohl). Once they find each other, introduce themselves and get a barring of their surroundings, they begin to panic. At first, unaware of the full seriousness of their situation.

They have drums of water holding enough gallons to last a good month or so, some drinking utensils, a scalpel, and mounted on a post is a white wall clock that has been modified to count down from thirty days. We see that a nameless scientist (Bjorn Johnson- Beer Fest) has decided to keep these subjects for his own sadistic experiment to test the depths of a human beings will to survive, while also dealing with his own childhood issues.

As the horror of the situation dawns on the group, the sadistically clinical scientist watches from the comfort of his den as his subjects squirm under the pressure and fatigue. They become more desperate by the minute, turning on each other and creating alliances.

While there may not be an abundance of “action” going on, I found myself interested and intrigued as to what was to happen of the group. The movie had actual characters that you’ll get to learn of, an interesting premise and a mad, sadistic scientist that makes for interesting schooling.

Hunger is a decent movie that puts a handful of people in a hopeless situation, keeps them from food and rescue, and watches how they interact, break down and lose control. The actors all did a commendable job within their roles. I’d recommend it for a VOD/DVD night in.
